The Zeytinburnu region of the city of Istanbul is the home of Veliefendi racecourse, a right handed oval turf track with a circumference of just over 2000 metres and a run in of 500 metres. Inside the turf track is an all-weather track with circumference 1870 metres. There is also a 1730 metre sand track which is used for training racehorses. The course first staged racing in 1913, after being developed by German specialists, and racing is administered by the Turkish Jockey Club. The track has a grandstand which seats 7600 punters, and the racecourse also boasts a museum. The principal race at the track is the Turkish Oaks known as the Gazi Race. It is run over 2400 metres in June and is limited to a maximum field of 22. It was first run on 10th June 1927 and celebrates the life of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The inaugural race winner was Neriman ridden by Ihsan Acti. Another feature race which the track hosts is the Prime Ministers Race which was first run in 1951. Other feature races include the Bosphorus Cup over 2400 metres and Topkapi Trophy over 1600 metres which are both run in September. |
